Volunteering

Be it in a neighborhood or in a country as a whole, mobilizing people is crucial to achieve improvements in the society. How can we attract people so they will be engaged in social transformation?

  • Democracy supposes the citizens' active participation in finding solutions that are of interest to the community and promote social development.

The context

The joint action of the inhabitants of a given region in favor of local development, by taking into account each individual’s demands and knowledge, is one of the mainstays of societal transformation. Nevertheless, according to the Opinião do Brasileiro sobre o Voluntariado [The Brazilians' opinion about volunteering] survey (2016), 72% of Brazilians state that they have never engaged in voluntary activities. Moreover, according to the World Giving Index 2017 report, Brazil ranks a meager 75th in number of people engaged in volunteering out of the 139 countries surveyed.

  • We believe in encouraging Itaú employees, as well as their contact networks, to do volunteer work as a way to contribute to enhancing the country’s social mobilization.

Purpose

The objective of the program is to develop conditions that favor the engagement of employees in social initiatives by offering opportunities for social participation and encouraging volunteer work.

Program Description

The Itaú employees who are interested in engaging in volunteer work are assisted by the Itaú Social staff in order to make it happen. There are volunteering opportunities within the activities organized by Itaú Social itself – like in reading mediation and financial education. In addition, employees are encouraged to propose initiatives spontaneously in different areas.

The Rede de Ações Sociais Itaú [Network of Itaú Social Initiatives] is an important tool to bring volunteers together. This on-line platform presents the various opportunities for voluntary work, as well as discussion forums and materials on volunteering. Through this platform, the employees can publicize the activities they develop and learn about opportunities in their regions.

Another strategy aimed at disseminating the importance of volunteering is the establishment of Mobiliza Itaú [Mobilize Itaú] Committees. These groups work together with their teams to publicize the available initiatives and encourage volunteering throughout the country along the lines of the Itaú Social causes.
