Protection was a key word in 2020. And, to meet the challenge of responding quickly to the demands posed by the pandemic to communities in situations of greater vulnerability, another fundamental concept this year was that of flexibility. Created in 2006 to make sporadic financial resources available for improving the infrastructure of civil society organizations (CSOs), supporting them in demands for the acquisition of equipment and permanent materials, and in small remodelings, the program underwent an adaptation to the needs of the moment.

In its traditional format, carried out until March 2020, the program indirectly benefited 19,344 children, adolescents and youths, by investing R$ 2 million in resources coming from the 2019 funding program, in the support of 39 institutions in 29 municipalities. With the beginning of the pandemic, the Community, Present! Program adopted a new focus. Through a special process calling for applications to receive funding, 25 CSOs were selected, which for three months distributed kits of essential items to more than 8 thousand families. Organizations from the states of Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo received resources to produce kits with essential items that included food, hygiene products and cooking gas. The supplies going into the kits were bought in the community itself, as a way of stimulating the local commerce.  Besides working through this specific selection process, the program enlarged its scope, adding it to the overall efforts of Itaú Social, which ensured emergency donations to hundreds of thousands of families during the pandemic.
